DESCRIPTION:Struggles for Justice: Then & Now\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis institute offers the opportunity for teachers to develop lessons that provide a historical lens to contemporary issues\, with an eye towards engaging students whose histories are often absent from grand narratives.  We will explore historical narratives surrounding the “New Jim Crow\,” immigration\, and LBGT history. Teachers will design a lesson using primary sources from the Library of Congress’ online collection of resources and will return during the school year to review student work. SUMMARY:Seminar: Teaching the Civil War and the American West - A Study in Objects
DESCRIPTION:This program is offered in partnership with the UCLA Public History Initiative and the Huntington-USC Institute for California and the West. This seminar locates the Civil War in a history of conflict over how the American nation would expand\, and who\, within that expanding nation\, might claim freedom\, property\, and citizenship. \nSeminar participants will interact with noted scholars\, engage in pedagogy sessions\, and read and dialogue about the essays in Empire and Liberty: The Civil War and the West\, which attendees will receive on the first day of the workshop. Participants will also collaborate and create CCSS aligned curriculum and will receive a binder that includes all of the sources reviewed in the workshops plus all of the lessons created by the workshop’s attendees. Finally\, participants will have the opportunity to publish their lesson plan and have it screencasted on the National Center for History in the Schools’ website. DESCRIPTION:Inquiry with Objects and Photographs\nThe History Project at Dominguez Hills in collaboration with the Autry National Center of the American West presents a Library of Congress Teaching with Primary Sources Workshop (Levels I/II)\n\nLearn to design engaging inquiry-based lessons using primary sources\, with an emphasis on objects and photographs\, for the K-2 classroom.\nAutry Museum Educator Rebekah Harding and expert teacher leaders from the History Project will demonstrate K-2 lessons and activities designed to develop knowledge and skills in history-social science as well as language and literacy aligned to the new CCSS/ELD standards.\nThe Library of Congress houses a treasure trove of primary source materials to engage young learners in historical inquiry and historical thinking.  This four-day workshop for  K-2 teachers will guide participants through the process of finding and utilizing these unique resources.\nWorkshop is provided at no cost to the participating teachers. A $200 stipend is provided to teachers for writing and implementing a lesson.\n\nEligibility: \n\nParticipants must be available to attend the four-day workshop and the follow-up day on Saturday\, October 3\, 2015.\nParticipants are required to design and implement an inquiry lesson.\nPriority will be given to K-2 teachers who have not participated in a Teaching with Primary Sources Level II Workshop in the past.\n\n\nNote: Day 1 will be held at the Autry National Center of the American West\n\nFor more information: https://csmp.ucop.edu/home/display_program_details/960094
