Los Angeles is often thought of a city without history. But history is everywhere- especially in the streets. This project traces the histories of street names around the city. We often think of street names as having a mundane, practical purpose. But many streets commemorate people, events or periods of history. Street names shape our sense of the past by marking, legitimizing and making “official” certain version of history in everyday life. They celebrate some communities and erase others.
The Public History Initiative is busy researching streets histories around Los Angeles. Please see our prototype street map below. This is an ongoing project and our map will grow over time.
